Ingrown Nails

Ingrown nails are a very common problem and seen daily at our practice. When a toenail is ingrown, it is curved and grows into the skin, usually at the nail borders (the sides of the nail). This digging in of the nail irritates the skin, often creating pain, redness, swelling and warmth in the toe. Dr. Martins has seen thousands of ingrown nails and understands how to address these once so they are addressed with 99% success rate.

Treatment Options

Treatment at primary care, urgent care, ER, and other podiatry offices are different as diagnosis is key to reduce re-occurrence. There can be 3 issues that need to be addressed in separate ways.

  1. Infection
  2. Ingrown
  3. Overgrowth of Tissue

For an ingrown procedure to be successful the infection MUST be addressed first! If all 3 are attempted to be addressed at the same time there is a likelihood of re-occurrence of the ingrown. At our office we address all 3 issues which may require 2 visits but a 99% success rate will be present.

At our office we use a different chemical called sodium hydroxide formula to kill the root of the nail that is causing the ingrown. We do not remove the complete nail and only address the affected area. If a patient request the complete nail removed we can also provide at patient request. To see how Dr. Martins performs this 5 min procedure under local anesthesia sees video.

Post Procedure

We provide an ingrown dressing kit which is needed to allow the area to heal. Patients are able to return to regular work, exercise and activity that same day. We typically see patients at 2 weeks to make sure it is healing well but also offer virtual visits if that is better for patients.
