Ankle Replacement & Ankle Fusion

Ankle fusion is a type of surgery to fuse the bones of your ankle into one piece. It’s also known as ankle arthrodesis. The surgery is usually done to treat arthritis in the ankle.

Ankle Replacement & Ankle Fusion

Ankle fusion or ankle replacement may be recommended when end-stage arthritis is diagnosed. The ankle cartilage has worn away, and bone painfully rubs against bone.

Ankle fusion involves cleaning the worn out ankle joint and fusing the bones together with screws, plates and bone grafts. Ankle fusion relieves pain, but it also limits your ankle’s range of motion. The limited mobility can change how you walk, and that can cause wear and tear, and ultimately painful arthritis, in other parts of your ankle, knee, and foot. Recovery is longer with ankle fusion than ankle replacement. Ankle replacement is a newer option. The procedure, also known as ankle arthroplasty, replaces the arthritic ankle joint with a metal and plastic prosthesis. The recovery period is shorter than ankle fusion. People regain a much wider range of motion and most of them return to active lifestyles.

You may need an ankle fusion or ankle replacement, if you have severe arthritis in your ankle. It can cause symptoms such as severe pain, inflammation, and stiffness. These can lead to difficulty walking. The 3 main types of ankle arthritis are:

  • Osteoarthritis, caused by wear and tear over time
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, caused by an autoimmune disease that affects the joints
  • Arthritis due to previous injury of your joint
Ankle replacement is often the treatment of choice for people who want to continue their active lifestyles. The artificial ankle joint is designed to more closely mimic the natural movement of the ankle, you can walk with a more natural gait, experience less pain and more range of motion. That spares the other parts of your knee and ankle that can wear out following ankle fusion. Some patients who have had an ankle fusion may be candidates for ankle replacement surgery to restore movement and function.

Every surgery has risks. The risks of ankle fusion include:

  • Infection
  • Damage to nearby nerves
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clot
  • The bones not joining together properly
  • Misalignment of the bones
  • New arthritis in nearby joints (very common)

While there is no cure for ankle arthritis, the condition can be managed. Conservative measures can include:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications
  • Steroid medications injected into the joints
  • Braces to support the joints/li>
  • Custom shoes
  • Physical therapy
  • Avoidance of aggravating activities

Over time, as the ankle cartilage wears away and the pain is significant, surgery may be the only way to manage symptoms.
